My CapStone Question

How can I create an opportunity for artisans to transform our waste into something meaningful?

sub-questions:
- How can we create a different value/association from the waste of the community?
- How are artisans making jewelry now?
- What are their techniques?
- How are they adding value/meaning into their handmade goods?
- Is there a history, purpose, or connection imbedded in their work?
- How many people are already transforming waste materials into objects?
- How are they doing it?
- What are the current products on the market for jewelry using recycled materials? (or has been before)
- What are the possibilities of transforming waste materials?
- How can a personal connection or significance be added into something from waste?

  1. Hi Jessica,
In your market study, you focused on the jewelry market. Are you still thinking that this would be your topic for thesis? How does waste fit into it? Are you considering something specific, like a way to recycle some material and have artisans use that to create unique jewelry pieces? you will have to make some rapid decisions about what you are going to be making, and how you will use design research to support your work in thesis.

  2. Hi Steven,
Well when I had originally did the market research I had not yet narrowed down my thesis topic so I did a general research of the jewelry market and not specifics. But over the past few weeks I have been coming down to my topic and its just like you said, I want to figure out how I can transform our waste materials into usable new materials that artisans can use to make jewelry. I have been testing with recycled plastics, natural materials, and paper and trying to find/figure out each materials limitations and possibilities. I have been researching on jewelry and its meanings it brings to the wearer and also have been researching on recycling.
