Comments on Jeffrey Turnbull's project direction

I was very interested to read Jeffery's statements about his thesis project. The idea of choosing to design a collection of men's accessories that features an umbrella, a fob (see image at left), and brush, classic accoutrements of every gentleman of sufficient "wit", is quite brilliant. By appropriating the language of a clearly obsolete culture of extravagant high-caste living, Jeffery sets up a sharp contrast with the parsimonious present. Post Bernie Madoff, everything has changed, I would argue, and people with money try to hide it, not flaunt it.  Jeffery's "collection" will seem perverse, as if insisting that the good times will never end can make it so. This project, if executed well, could provide a fascinating and provocative commentary.
