Big Questions

Big Question:
How can a fashion accessory using religious symbology become a growing trend in pop ulture to an audience that doesn't quite understand the true meaning and use of the object?

Research Questions:
--Why are fashion accessories using religious iconography offensive to some and not to others?
--In what forms has religious iconography been expoited in our popular culture?
--How are certain religious figures viewed as in popular culture?
--Why are trends set in the first plce? When are they established? Who sets them? Does materialistic culture help establish these trends?
--Why do people follow trends?
--How have celebrities become iconoic figures to the youth that follow pop culture?
--Does following trends fulfill insecurities within people?
--Why do religious groups separate and differentiate themselves from others? What are their differences? Similarities?
--Why do people follow certain religious rituals? What makes them continue to execute these rituals on a daily basis? Why do these religions require their followers to do the routines?

  1. these are fascinating questions, Sean. You are going to have to do a lot of research to find answers, but as your knowledge increases, hopefully a powerful new product idea will emerge. Are you looking at things like Kaballah, where celebrities practice and they have to wear certain things. And, Scientology has sacrements and accessories. I think you should do a cross cultural investigation of objects that people from different religions use in celebration of their particular rites or devotions. It might be very fun and provacative to do a project based on the creation of religious accessories from religions of the future that don't yet exist, or are considered fringe organizations now, but could grow rapidly given various identifiable trends...
